What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils that are derived from plants for improving or maintaining the quality of live on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level.

The story of Aromatherapy begins with the most ancient civilizations. Over 5000 yrs ago, the Egyptians perfected the art of Aromatherapy. Plants and their oils were used every day for keeping their health and beautifying their bodies and souls. In 1928 René Maurice Gattefosse was credited with coining the word Aromatherapy. Today the practice of aromatherapy is used every day in various forms.


What are essential oils?

oils are the essence of the plant; it is its heart and soul. Pure essential oils are extracted from pedals, leaves, twigs, fruit, bark, roots and other parts. There are many different ways to extract oils from their origins, depending on which part of the plant contains the oil. The extraction method could be done by distillation, enfleurage, expression or solvent. The quality and quantity of essential oil produced by a plant is determined by many interrelated factors; the climate, altitude, type of soil and its fertility are significant, even the month and time of day plays a big role. On average essential oils are made up of over a hundred different chemical constituents and some are even more complex. The main categories of compounds are terpenes, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones, phenols, ect… Essential oils have many therapeutic actions, such as: stimulant, analgesic, antiseptic, sedative and more. Blending is an integral part of aromatherapy. Essential oils are dynamic remedies because they work in synergy, meaning that they work best together in harmony.
